Book Review: The 39 Clues, The Sword Thief

I just finished the 3rd book in The 39 Clues series, The Sword Thief, by Peter Lerangis. I’m pleased with the ability of these authors to continue ratcheting up the tension, not simply relying on what could potentially be formulaic. This one really had me guessing, and there were a few twists at the end that I didn’t see coming.

I’m always happy when a book, film, or TV series has guts enough to do hard things, and not play it safe. I really like that Amy and Dan’s characters are developing and deepening, not just staying on the surface. There should be a nice story arc for them, beneath the mere plot-level progression of searching for clues.

I can’t say much about this in detail, suffice it to say that, if they continue with this level of quality for the next 36 books (that’s right, 1 clue per book so far!), this will be a very successful series.

The next one is Beyond the Grave by Jude Watson, but I have to wait for it to come in at the library…
